November 2012 Dear Supporter, The NJ Food for Thought School Breakfast Campaign partners send our thanks to all school officials and staff who worked so hard to keep children safe, parents informed and to get our schools back up and running during this trying time. Your dedication to New Jersey’s children is admirable. Hopefully, things have returned to near normal and you can take a minute to read about what’s happening on the school breakfast front in New Jersey… How Does Your District Rate on School Breakfast?Advocates for Children of New Jersey has published school breakfast participation rates for every NJ district with at least 20 percent of children eligible for free- or reduced-priced school breakfast. The county data sheets also show how much additional federal dollars districts would draw down to feed kids if they had 100 percent participation. Districts Step up to Meet School Breakfast ChallengeKudos to Camden, Paterson, Union City, and Bayonne Public Schools for launching classroom breakfast pilots this fall. All four districts are now serving breakfast to children in the classroom right after school starts in at least one of their schools. School officials report early success, even as they iron out a few kinks. Plans call for expanding to more schools as the year progresses. Serving breakfast after the bell significantly increases student participation, helping more children to succeed in school. The NJ Food for Thought School Breakfast campaign partners urge districts to adopt this approach to school breakfast. If your district is launching “breakfast after the bell,” please e-mail rdorsey@acnj.org and let us know so we can feature your district in an upcoming Food For Thought School Breakfast E-news. What do NJ leaders say about school breakfast?Free School Breakfast WebinarThe School Nutrition Foundation (SNF), in partnership with the Walmart Foundation, will host a FREE webinar on Nov. 28 from 2 p.m. to 3:15 p.m. entitled: "Successful Accountability Practices for Breakfast in the Classroom Programs." This webinar is for you, whether you're already implementing breakfast in the classroom and looking for ways to streamline your practice, or you're considering bringing breakfast to the classroom and outside of the traditional cafeteria setting.
