School leaders gather for breakfast summit

School leaders from across the state shared school breakfast success stories and strategies for building on the momentum of increasing school breakfast participation. The Garden State School Breakfast Summit was held March 27 in Trenton. Superintendents, principals, teachers, custodial staff and parents were joined by Agriculture Secretary Douglas Fisher, Assistant Health Commissioner Gloria Rodriguez and Nancy Curry, director of student services for the NJ Department of Education, at this inspiring and informative event.

Legislators support school breakfast

Legislation sponsored by Assemblyman Joe Cryan (D-20) would encourage school districts to serve breakfast after the bell, direct the state Departments of Education and Agriculture to assist districts to achieve this goal and require the agriculture department to collect data on how schools are serving breakfast. The measure was approved by the state Assembly in March.

Improving Direct Certification: Win, Win, Win
Thursday, April 10, 2014 at 3 p.m.

This call will explore effective strategies for states and school districts to improve their direct certification rates, which help increase access to school meals, while reducing paperwork for families and school districts. This is more important than ever as Community Eligibility rolls out nationwide. Speakers will address states’ progress in meeting national performance standards, key strategies that help states improve and availability of federal technical assistance and grant funds to help states make these improvements.
