Great News! S2027 bill requiring background checks of family child care providers passed in Senate.

Dear Supporter,

There's good news in making New Jersey's kids safer.  The State Senate voted unanimously to require registered family child care providers and certain family members to undergo criminal history background checks.

The bill addresses a basic safety issue, particularly since so many children who spend their days in family child care are infants and toddlers.   It makes sense to take such steps to protect those children who are least able to communicate should issues arise.  The Assembly will be scheduling hearings on the companion bill in the fall.

This bill passed thanks to ACNJ's collaborative advocacy efforts with the New Jersey Association of Child Care Resource and Referral Agencies and thanks to those of you that took action and contacted legislators.  Having legislators hear from multiple voices was an effective way of realizing success!

Sincerely,

Cecilia Zalkind
