Advocates for Children of New Jersey will host a Newark community discussion tomorrow, October 5th, exploring the complexities of chronic absenteeism in Newark's high schools and possible solutions for improving student attendance. The community conversation will take place at Rutgers Univerty-Newark at The Paul Robeson Campus Center (Bergen Room), located at 350 Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Blvd., Newark, New Jersey 07102 from 9 a.m. to 12:30 p.m.
The event will begin with a presentation of the findings from ACNJ's September report: Showing Up Matters: A Look at Chronic Absenteeism Inside Newark's High Schools. Panel discussions of first-hand experiences and a look at systems changes will follow. Panelists include city and school officials and community members:
- Robert Gregory, Deputy Superintendent, Newark Public Schools
- Antoinette Baskerville-Richardson, Chief Education Officer, City of Newark
- Angela Mincy, Principal, Barringer High School
- Dazhiona Santiago, recent Newark high school graduate
- Marcellis Counts, President, Skooled mentoring program
